In 1967, one month before a nationwide election, Papadopoulos executed a coup to take over political power in Greece, overthrowing the king and royal family. He captured and tortured political figures who opposed his rule, and later declared himself president. He then led the creation of a constitution that gave absolute power to the president, thus to himself.
