5.3 Characters, Conflict, and Idioms in "Daughter of Invention" by Julia Alvarez
Question 6 • 26-27 - Humble ISD CR - English I A - 1st Nine Weeks
Read the excerpt from "Daughter of Invention"."Thanks, thanks a lot, Mom!" Yoyo stormed out of that room and into her own. Her daughters never called her Mom except when they wanted her to feel how much she had failed them in this country. She was a good enough Mami, fussing and scolding and giving advice, but a terrible girlfriend parent, a real failure of a Mom.
Answer
A
They sometimes wish their mother would be more like the American moms.
B
They sometimes wish their mother would stop inventing useless things.
C
They sometimes wish their mother would fuss over them more than she does.
D
They sometimes wish their mother would move them to the Dominican Republic.
Explanation
The excerpt contrasts the familiar Spanish title “Mami” with “Mom,” which the daughters use when they want their mother to feel she has failed them in this country. This suggests they want her to be more like the American mothers they see around them. The best answer is “They sometimes wish their mother would be more like the American moms.”
