Which statements describe the cell membrane? Check all that apply.
What happens when molecules diffuse across the cell membrane?
The diagram shows molecules moving across a selectively permeable membrane. The smaller circles represent salt molecules, and the dashed line represents the membrane. Which statement best describes the movement of the salt molecules?
The diagram shows a normal red blood cell and a shrunken red blood cell, both of which are in salt water. In which direction did the water move to make the red blood cell shrink? Why did water move in that direction?
Water moved out of the red blood cell. It moved in this direction because the concentration of salt in the water outside the cell is higher than the concentration of salt inside the cell. Through the process of osmosis, water moves from an area of higher water concentration (inside the cell) to an area of lower water concentration (outside the cell in the salt water) to reach equilibrium.
