Two methods used in forensics and missing-person cases are PCR analysis and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. PCR analysis is beneficial because it allows forensic scientists to duplicate a very small amount of DNA collected from a crime scene into a larger amount that can be tested. Mitochondrial DNA analysis is useful because it does not rely on nuclear DNA, making it effective for analyzing older biological samples or remains, such as hair or bone, where nuclear DNA may be degraded. Additionally, Y-chromosome analysis can be used to track genetic markers passed from father to son.
