Tenement neighborhoods were crowded and unhealthy places where many families lived in small, poorly ventilated apartments. Buildings often had little natural light, shared bathrooms, and limited access to clean water. Garbage and sewage could collect in the streets, creating unpleasant odors and helping diseases spread. These conditions made daily life difficult and dangerous for the working-class families who lived there.
