Legend of Film NoirAlfred Hitchcock was one of the greatest movie directors ever. The films of today that terrify usually do so with graphic violence. Hitchcock, who made movies from the 1920s through the 1970s, made some of the darkest films ever with minimal or no violence. The key ingredient of Hitchcock’s genius was the suspense he built into each film. In this scene from Notorious, Ingrid Bergman plays Alicia, a beautiful German-born woman, who marries Sebastian, a Nazi in Brazil, in order to spy on him for the US government. In this tense scene, Sebastian hosts a party at his mansion. Alicia plans to sneak another US agent, Devlin (played by Cary Grant), into Sebastian’s wine cellar to look for top-secret information. If Sebastian and the Nazis discover her, she knows they will kill her. COMMENT:I love this movie! I agree, Hitchcock was the most brilliant director ever!
