Brooke read about coffee grinders in a book about pioneer living. Pioneers enjoyed a hot cup of coffee to warm them in the chilly mornings. The coffee beans had to be roasted in a skillet first and then put in a bag to be crushed. Often they were crushed with a camp axe or hammer. Some, more established, pioneer families had an old-fashioned coffee grinder, which crushed the coffee beans for them.
