In your own words, describe what geography is all about. Write a short paragraph that explains what it means to study geography. Give two examples of things you might study as a geographer. (Hint: Think about the five themes and six essential elements of geography.)
Geography is the study of Earth’s places, people, environments, and the connections among them. Geographers examine how physical features and human activities are distributed across space and how they influence one another. For example, a geographer might study how climate affects farming or how people and goods move between cities.
Regions are changing constantly. When two people group places together into a region, they might do it differently. What region of the United States do you live in? In a short paragraph, describe your region and write about three distinguishing characteristics it possesses.
I live in the Midwest region of the United States. Three characteristics of this region are its mostly flat farmland, its continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, and its importance in farming and manufacturing. The Midwest also includes major cities such as Chicago and has many small rural communities.
Our environments can change human behavior. Describe some ways that environment changes the choices we make. What does the connection between humans and environment have to do with the study of geography?
The environment changes our choices in many ways. Climate can influence the clothes we wear, the foods we grow, and the homes we build. Mountains, rivers, and roads can affect where people live and how they travel. Geography studies these connections between humans and the environment, including how people adapt to and modify the places where they live.
What does it mean to talk about "place"? When geographers study place, they're looking at what a certain spot is like. What could you find there? Why is it appealing? What characteristics does it have? In a short paragraph, show that you understand place by describing one of your favorite spots to visit. What kind of place is it?
One of my favorite places to visit is a local park. It has walking trails, trees, open grassy areas, and a small pond. I enjoy it because it is peaceful, attractive, and a good place to exercise or spend time with friends. It is a recreational and natural place with both physical and human characteristics.
