In 1905, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the of Massachusetts in Jacobson v. Massachusetts. In this case, the Supreme Court decided that it was okay for states to require smallpox vaccinations for adults. The Supreme Court said that some children may be exempt if their doctor said they were "not fit for vaccination.” The Court also said this does not violate the equal protection rights of adults if the ruling is applied equally.
