As the poet Amy Lowell wrote, when we encounter someone heroic, “from that moment life is changed, and we / Become of more heroic temper . . . we dare to be / What Nature meant us.” Recognizing a hero doesn’t just celebrate them—it helps us all find the heroic parts of ourselves.
