The promise of the Statue of Liberty only partly rang true for immigrants coming to America. The statue and the poem by Emma Lazarus offered hope of freedom and a better life to the tired and poor from other countries. Many immigrants did find jobs in factories, built new communities, and eventually improved their lives through hard work. However, the reality was often very difficult. New arrivals faced crowded tenements, low wages, long hours, and dangerous working conditions in industrial cities. They also met nativism and discrimination, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and later immigration quotas that limited who could enter. At places like Ellis Island, officials inspected and sometimes rejected people, showing the welcome was not always open. Overall, while some achieved the American Dream, many discovered that the statue's promise of equal opportunity was not fully kept.
