Choose a plant tissue. Write an explanation of how that tissue’s structure relates to its function. Be specific and detailed.
Xylem is a vascular tissue responsible for transporting water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant. Its structure is specialized for this function because it consists of long, hollow tubes made of dead cells called tracheids and vessel elements. These cells lack cytoplasm and organelles, creating an unobstructed path for water flow. Furthermore, the cell walls are reinforced with lignin, a tough polymer that provides structural support and prevents the tubes from collapsing under the negative pressure created by transpiration.
Choose a plant organ. Write an explanation of how that organ’s structure relates to its function. Be specific and detailed.
I chose to explain the leaf. The leaf's structure is typically broad and flat, providing a large surface area to capture maximum sunlight for photosynthesis. Within the leaf, the palisade mesophyll layer contains many chloroplasts packed closely together to efficiently absorb light. Furthermore, the leaf has small pores called stomata on its underside, which allow for the exchange of gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen, while the waxy cuticle on the top prevents excessive water loss.
