Rita has two small containers, one holding a liquid and one holding a gas. Rita transfers the substances to two larger containers. Compare the behavior of the atoms in the liquid and in the gas once they are moved to the larger containers.
The atoms in the liquid will move to the bottom of the larger container and take its shape, but the liquid's volume will remain the same. In contrast, the atoms in the gas will move rapidly and spread out to fill the entire volume and shape of the larger container.
