Why are lichens a good pioneer species after a volcanic eruption?

Lichens can grow directly on bare rock, even when a volcanic eruption has left little or no soil. They help break down the rock and add organic matter, creating conditions that allow other organisms and plants to establish. Therefore, “They are able to grow on bare rock” is the best answer.
