The “Okies” were people, many from Oklahoma and nearby Great Plains states, who left their farms during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. They faced drought, crop failure, dust storms, loss of land and jobs, poverty, and difficult migration west, where many struggled to find work, housing, and fair treatment.
