Draw upon your knowledge from the lesson and readings. In a short paragraph of about five to seven sentences, describe which of Truman’s policies you believe to be the most important and why. Remember to include details that support your stance.

Answer:

I think the Truman Doctrine was Truman’s greatest legacy. It committed the American people to helping any country at risk of a communist takeover. This policy was initially implemented when foreign aid was sent to Greece and Turkey, as both nations faced severe political and economic issues. It signaled the United States would become involved internationally to limit communism. This pledge would define American foreign policy for the duration of the Cold War. While other initiatives like the Marshall Plan also played a part, the Truman Doctrine set out more broad-ranging rationale which would determine US activity in foreign affairs for decades to come.
