What is the Ring of Fire? In a paragraph, explain how the Ring of Fire impacts natural events in Latin America. Which of the two earthquakes discussed in this lesson occurred along the Ring of Fire?

Answer:

Responses may vary but should include some or all of the following information: (All responses should identify the Ring of Fire as a zone of tectonic activity.) The Ring of Fire is an area of tectonic activity. It surrounds the Pacific Ocean and runs along the west coast of Latin America. Large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in this zone. In 2010, a major earthquake struck the coast of Chile. The earthquake resulted in massive damage to infrastructure.

Identify the largest challenge currently facing the Amazon Rainforest. In a short paragraph, provide examples of possible solutions. How would you approach this challenge?

Answer:

Responses may vary but should include some or all of the following information: (All responses should explain that the Amazon Rainforest is a shrinking forest.) The Amazon Rainforest is a shrinking forest. Deforestation is a major problem, and it’s often caused by farming and ranching. The rich soil and the need for food resources for growing populations make the rainforest region vulnerable to soil erosion and deforestation. The amount of shrinking rainforest can also be attributed in part to climate change and pollution influences. Conservation efforts include reforestation and the use of sustainable practices. Companies and governments are working to educate others about conservation issues. Governments may create legislation to try to stop deforestation.

Give three examples of natural resources found in Latin America. Explain which industries use these natural resources and the environmental challenges that can occur as a result.

Answer:

Responses may vary but should include some or all of the following information: There are many natural resources found in Latin America that can be used for industry. Three examples of these resources are fertile soil, minerals, and the Amazon Rainforest. Fertile soil can be used in farming and ranching industries. Farmers can grow important cash crops, such as coffee, soybeans, and tropical fruits. Ranchers can use the land to raise and breed cattle, one of the leading industries in Brazil. Though these are important industries in Latin America, if people can create environment challenges to the soil if they are not careful. Possible challenges include soil exhaustion, erosion, deforestation, and water contamination from pesticides. A large supply of minerals has led to the development of the mining industry, which is very important to countries like Chile, Colombia, Argentina, and Peru. Though mining creates economic stability, it also creates environmental challenges! Issues such as water pollution (with toxins like mercury and bauxite) and air pollution (from heavy machinery) are common. The Amazon Rainforest itself is an amazing natural resource that allows for industries like mining, farming, ranching, and logging. However, if left unchecked, these industries can create environmental challenges such as deforestation, water contamination, air pollution, and the extinction of plant and animal species.
