When selecting a fiction text, how do the characters factor into the selection process?

When choosing fiction, readers are more likely to enjoy a story if its characters interest them and change or develop as the story unfolds. That makes “texts with dynamic characters they find interesting” the best choice. Similarity to characters in other books or current events, and challenging vocabulary, are not the main qualities described here.
