Read the excerpt from Early Victorian Tea Set.In the eighteenth century Josiah Wedgwood had made some of the most expensive stoneware ceramics – in jasper and basalt – in Britain, but this tea set shows that by the 1840s, when Wedgwood produced it, the company was aiming at a much wider market. This is quite clearly mid-range pottery, simple earthenware of a sort that many quite modest British households were then able to afford. But the owners of this particular set must have had serious social aspirations, because all three pieces have been decorated with a drape of lacy hallmarked silver.
Read the excerpt from Mateo’s argumentative essay. Students should only be assigned classic literature in school. Curriculum is designed to teach students historical facts; therefore, contemporary works should not be included. If students insist on reading modern texts, they should do so in their free time. People who read contemporary novels do not respect the important authors who helped advance the English language. If learning institutions want to develop competent citizens, they will eliminate contemporary texts from the curriculum.
Read the excerpt titled "Movies are In, Books are Out.”Physical books are becoming a thing of the past in education. Movies based on books are more inclusive to all learners and allow for viewers to visualize what the author intended on a screen rather than in their minds. Movie viewers are able to better answer questions about characterization if they can see what the character is like. Viewers are le ss likely to become distracted while a movie is playing in comparison to reading a novel. Students reading independently are often off task and distracted. There are many who claim that film cannot be used to teach literary elements, but in my book, Finding Ways to Teach Differently, this topic is discussed in depth. Not only will I supply the background and research to support this new approach to teaching literature, but I will also provide concrete examples of how these techniques can be directly applied in the classroom. – Aiyana Bearly, Ed.D, associate professor of Literature Education at Koopla College (June 2019)
Read the excerpt from radrollersports.comThe history of roller skating goes back a lot further than you would think. Back in 1743, actors strapped wheels onto their shoes in a play, attempting to show that they were ice skating. These weren’t the quad, or four-wheeled, roller skates you see today; those weren’t invented until 1863. According to the National Museum of Roller Skating, James Plimpton not only invented quad skates but also made them popular. Then, as they say, the rest is history! Roller skating remains a popular pastime today; it is a relatively inexpensive, fun exercise that requires no special equipment besides the skates themselves. You don’t need a team, either—just you and the sidewalk, and you’re participating in the sport. Although it is technically a solo activity, there is no other sport that fosters friendships like skating; the skating community is a bonded group of people who have unbridled passion for the same thing: roller skating.
Read the excerpt from Carlito’s letter to the editor.College athletes should be paid for playing sports. They bring in revenue for their teams by attracting both sponsors and crowds. Shouldn’t the athletes get a share of this money? They must keep up their grades in addition to their many hours of training each day. If students working in the campus bookstore can get paid, there is no reason that the athletes should not be paid as well. The athletes are working as hard as—if not harder than—bookstore employees.
Read the excerpt from Early Victorian Tea Set.Among the upper classes, tea had been popular since before 1700. It received celebrity endorsement from Charles II’s queen, Catherine of Braganza, and from Queen Anne. It came from China, it was expensive, refreshingly bitter and drunk in tiny cups without milk or sugar. People kept their tea in locked tea caddies, as if it were a drug; for those who could afford it, it often was. In the 1750s Samuel Johnson confessed himself a happy addict:A hardened and shameless tea drinker, who has for twenty years diluted his meals with only the infusion of this fascinating plant, whose kettle scarcely has time to cool, who with Tea amuses the evening, with Tea solaces the midnights, and with Tea welcomes the morning.
Read the excerpt Sophia is using for her essay.Reality television has transformed the entertainment experience for viewers. It has gained momentum and become one of the most watched television genres among young people. However, researchers are wondering if this trend is a detriment. In a survey conducted by Oregon State University, 68% of people aged 18–29 reported that reality TV is their favorite type of programming. What makes this genre so popular is the philosophy behind it: viewers can enjoy watching "real people” live their "real lives.” However, one has to wonder—can fans decipher reality from fantasy? For reality TV to simply be entertainment, viewers must have the maturity to differentiate between scripted scenes and real-life scenarios.– "Reality or Fantasy?” by Delma Santiago, USFunWeekly.com, 2019

Read the excerpt from a job manual. One of the first guidelines that new employees in retail generally learn is that "the customer is always right.” Many companies rely on repeat business and word of mouth to grow. If customers have bad experiences, they are less likely to return and will tell friends about their frustrations. New employees need to remember to always put the customer first, even if it goes against other company policies, or they will lose their job.
Read the excerpt from Emani’s argumentative essay. If someone wants to learn a new skill or trade, there is media online to provide instruction. With the advancements in technology, everyone will be trained through video. People can even learn how to perform medical procedures online. As soon as everyone shares their knowledge online, formal education will no longer be necessary.

Read the excerpt from Teagan’s essay about deforestation.Deforestation is a global catastrophe, with billions of trees being chopped down each year. The primary justification for the destruction of forests all over the world is an increased demand for agricultural products—especially cattle. People require food, and they must have a place to grow and raise it. Deforestation not only clears vegetation that removes carbon dioxide from the air, but the very act of clearing forests increases greenhouse gas emissions. This is why becoming vegan is the healthiest choice when determining lifestyle changes.
Read the excerpt "Use Cloth to Save the Earth.”It may be difficult to imagine, but over four million tons of disposable diapers are thrown away each year. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, solid waste from disposable diapers introduces pathogens into the environment. Citizens who stand idly by, watching our planet suffer, are apathetic and callous. Furthermore, studies have shown that disposable diapers will never degrade in landfills. Many people do worry about the burden of cost, since the initial investment in cloth diapers is steep. However, a study found that on average, families save around $900 per year by using reusable diapers. To help save our planet, people need to consider using reusable diapers.– Naylea LaBlanc
Read the excerpt from "Benin Plaque: The Oba with Europeans.”Many wild theories were put forward. It was thought that the plaques must have come from ancient Egypt, or perhaps that the people of Benin were one of the lost tribes of Israel. Or the sculptures must have derived from European influence (after all, these were the contemporaries of Michelangelo, Donatello and Cellini). But research quickly established that the Benin plaques were entirely West African creations, made without European influence. The Europeans had to revisit, and to overhaul, their assumptions of easy cultural superiority.

Read the excerpt from Jahiem’s argumentative essay. It is imperative that elementary school students have their nap times revoked. Children under ten do not have enough responsibility to require an established rest time. In contrast, teenagers participate in extracurricular activities that require their full focus and energy. Sure, both ages are growing rapidly, but which group really needs more sleep? High schools should implement built-in rest time for teenagers to ensure that they are successful in their endeavors. Schools must choose between having rested children or rested teenagers.
Read the paragraph. My grandmother taught me to appreciate architecture. She grew up in Greece and photographed ancient ruins in her youth. She told me that people do not build things of beauty the way they used to, and her favorite example was Greek Ionic columns. As an architecture student today, I wonder if I will ever create anything as beautiful as these.
