Without obtaining a warrant, the FBI put a recording device on the public telephone booth Katz used. The recorded evidence led to his conviction. However, Katz challenged it on the grounds of the Fourth Amendment’s protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. The Supreme Court ruled in Katz’s favor. The court ruled that the Fourth Amendment applies to recording devices, too. The justices based their decision on the idea that the law protects people and that Katz had an expectation of privacy when he entered the telephone booth.
