In the left image, the black area appears to be a vase, while the white space forms two people looking at each other. In the right image, the colors are reversed, so the black space appears to show the two faces and the white space becomes the vase. This shows that perception depends on the figure-ground relationship, because the mind decides which shape is the main figure and which is the background. It is an example of a reversible figure-ground illusion.

In the mirrored ball, the objects are varying sizes, which allows certain objects or subjects (ex: man) to appear closer and others farther away (window), creating depth and form. The artist also made some objects curved (ex: bookshelf and ceiling) and receding, in order to show the curvilinear lines of sphere of the mirror. The hand holding the ball, with its two fingers in the forefront, and its others behind, add to the 3-dimensional appearance.

The painting is *The Starry Night* by Vincent van Gogh. The swirling sky can symbolize emotional turbulence and the artist’s intense inner feelings. The tall cypress tree may symbolize death or a connection between earth and heaven, while the glowing stars and moon suggest hope, spirituality, and infinity. The quiet village and church contrast with the energetic sky, symbolizing calm human life beneath the powerful forces of nature.

Modeling in art is the use of light, shadow, shading, and gradual changes in tone to make figures and objects appear three-dimensional. Michelangelo was considered a master because he created convincing volume and depth in the human body, clothing, and drapery. In The Holy Family, the figures have realistic anatomy, strong forms, and carefully shaded surfaces that make them seem solid and lifelike.

The painting is *The Raft of the Medusa* by Théodore Géricault. Géricault uses a pyramid-shaped arrangement of figures to guide the viewer’s eye from the dead and dying people in the foreground to the man signaling for help at the top. The wide ocean and open sky create a strong sense of distance and isolation, while the crowded raft fills the lower portion of the painting with emotion and tension. Sfumato is an Italian term for graduations of light and shadow to produce a hazy effect. This painting is by Correggio called, Assumption of the Virgin. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s spotlighting effects of illumination of sfumato, Correggio used sfumato to create a dreamlike effect in his fresco. The light at the top appears to filter down through the clouds among the shadows and figures. Although the objects are defined and recognizable, there is still an overall haze and blend across the entire image.
