Visual Element - Texture

Question 4 of 10 • (2026-2027) Monyok -- Art I -- 1st nine weeks

Explain the difference between cross-hatching and impasto in creating a sense of texture. Why would an artist select one over the other?

Answer

Answer:

Cross-hatching creates texture by using intersecting lines to build shading and suggest the surface quality of an object. Impasto creates texture by applying paint thickly so the surface is physically raised and textured. An artist would choose cross-hatching when working in drawing or when they want a controlled, linear way to suggest texture. They would choose impasto when they want bold, expressive marks and actual texture that can be seen and sometimes felt on the painting surface.
