Alpine and Taiga Biomes

Question 4 • Environmental Science A

Compare and contrast the main characteristics of the alpine and taiga biomes.

Answer

Answer:

Both the alpine and taiga biomes have cold conditions and organisms adapted to harsh environments. The alpine biome is found at high elevations, where thin, rocky, nutrient-poor soils and a short growing season limit plant growth; above the tree line, trees are generally absent. The taiga is a large subarctic forest dominated by coniferous trees such as spruce and pine, with long, cold winters and a short summer. Alpine animals often have adaptations for low oxygen at high elevations, while taiga animals commonly have thick insulation and may change color, migrate, or hibernate seasonally.
