Read the passage.In 1871, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and several other women sent a letter to the US Senate and the House of Representatives. They demanded that Congress grant women the right to vote in elections. They also asked to speak before lawmakers to address their concerns and explain why women deserved this right. Although these activists wanted to create a more equitable society, they also have been criticized for their approach. They often did not include women of color in their efforts, and, at times, they ignored the contributions of Black women who were fighting for voting rights.Over the years, the activism of Cady Stanton, Anthony, and others put enormous pressure on the government. Finally, in 1920, the ratification of the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. Although this legislation was a major milestone, it only guaranteed voting rights for White women. Women of color were unable to safely vote in most areas, particularly in the segregated South.
