Openly gay artist Keith Haring became famous during the 1980s for his graffiti-style art. In 1989, he painted a mural in the city of Barcelona, Spain, to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic. Haring created a striking image all in red on the side of a dilapidated building in a low-income community. The mural was entitled Todos Juntos Podemos Parar el SIDA, which means "Together We Can Stop AIDS” in English. It brought attention to this issue at a time when some celebrities and political figures were reluctant to discuss it, inspiring the public to feel hopeful. Keith Haring died from AIDS complications in 1990. During his lifetime, he produced over 50 works of art in public spaces in cities worldwide.
