It is also called crude oil and is extracted from underground or beneath the ocean floor. Refineries separate it into useful products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Petroleum is also used to make plastics, asphalt, and many chemicals. Because it takes millions of years to form, it is a nonrenewable resource.
