Read the excerpt from Mateo’s argumentative essay. Students should only be assigned classic literature in school. Curriculum is designed to teach students historical facts; therefore, contemporary works should not be included. If students insist on reading modern texts, they should do so in their free time. People who read contemporary novels do not respect the important authors who helped advance the English language. If learning institutions want to develop competent citizens, they will eliminate contemporary texts from the curriculum.
