Politics in the New State

Question 1 • OK-Oklahoma History

Using complete sentences, explain how Oklahoma City became the new capital of Oklahoma. Be sure to discuss the controversy surrounding the moving of the state capital in your answer.

Answer

Answer:

Oklahoma City became the capital after a statewide vote in 1910 approved moving the capital from Guthrie. Although the Oklahoma Constitution had made Guthrie the temporary capital, many people wanted the capital in Oklahoma City because it was larger and more centrally located. The move was very controversial because Governor Charles Haskell had the state seal taken from Guthrie to Oklahoma City quickly, before opponents could stop the transfer. Guthrie leaders argued that the move was illegal and challenged it in court, but the courts upheld the election results, so Oklahoma City became the new capital.
