Russell read these lines on a website about tropical fish.Fish make the best pets. Surveys taken in elementary schools all over suggest that more than 85% of students have had fish as pets. Fish have been around longer than dinosaurs--over 400 million years! There are more types of fish than there are mammals, birds, and reptiles combined. People have enjoyed watching fish for a very long time.
Read this excerpt from a bank's website.Kids can learn to save money, too! Experts encourage children of all ages to start their very own savings accounts, because it teaches them responsibility and helps them save for college. The recommended savings amount is 20% of any earnings, such as birthday money or allowances. So before they head to the mall or the candy store, kids' first stop should be the bank to make a savings deposit. It won't take long for the savings to add up!
Amelia is writing a response to this excerpt from "On Becoming an Inventor" by Dean Kamen.I decided to put his entire machine shop in our basement, but there were two problems... One, his shop wouldn't fit in our basement, and two, there was no way the lathe, weighing fifteen hundred pounds, and the milling machine, weighing two thousand pounds, could be carried into the basement. I solved this problem by hiring a contractor to dig a large hole, break open a wall of the basement, enclose the addition with concrete, and add a roof that could be used for building an outside deck to the house. I also enlarged my mother's kitchen and pantry. I now had the entire machine shop in our basement.
Rosa read this paragraph on a kids’ safety website.Sunscreen is the most important thing to put on each day! Sunscreen provides more protection against the sun’s harmful rays than wide-brim sun hats and large beach umbrellas. Dermatologists warn about the harmful permanent damage of sunburn. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher prevents this damage. Kids should apply sunscreen thirty minutes before going outside and then reapply it every three to four hours. Special care should be taken to cover nose, ears, cheeks, and shoulders.
Read this excerpt from A Short Walk around the Pyramids and through the World of Art by Philip Isaacson. If we knew more about the old customs of the Kota, our experience would be richer, but whatever its original meaning, the Kota funerary figure is still a powerful work of art. It can reach across a hundred years and a language we don't understand to touch our lives. We recognize the figure as a person, although it doesn't look like one. Instead of copying the human body— and many African tribes could do that perfectly—it only suggests the human body. It excites our imagination, and our imagination turns the Kota figure into a person. Its triangles, cylinders, and parts of circles remind us of eyes, a neck, and hair, and our imagination tells us that we are looking at a human figure. The figure is an example of abstract art, an art that doesn't intend things to look real. If we searched, we could find examples of abstract art the world over.
Jada has been asked to respond to this excerpt from "On Becoming an Inventor" by Dean Kamen.I found that at college I could get help from my teachers with solving business problems and in learning new techniques for designing new things. I enjoyed talking to my professors and learning physics and other complex subjects—but I never had time to go to class. I literally never went to class. My professors were mentors and private tutors. The professors gave me as much time as they reasonably could. Every once in a while one would say, "Sorry, I've got to go teach a class"—and leave.
Anya read this paragraph in a book about winter sports. The first ice skates were made with animal bones that people used to slide over frozen lakes and rivers. Ice-skating has become a very popular indoor and outdoor sport all over the world. It is great exercise, too. Ice-skating for thirty minutes burns over 250 calories and strengthens leg muscles. Ice-skating is a great way to spend free time.
Read this excerpt from a school newsletter. You are not too young to start recycling! Environmental scientists say that kids are often the most eco-friendly members of their families. They can teach adults ways to save our planet. So, help your parents sort paper and plastic. Remind family members to take reusable bags to the grocery store. Use old boxes and empty paper tubes for art and building projects. It’s never too early to start green habits!
Read this excerpt from A Short Walk around the Pyramids and through the World of Art by Philip Isaacson. The traditional art of African nations is a wonderful part of the world's art. Like the art of all people who live in groups called tribes—the people of the Pacific islands, the Native Americans, the Eskimos, the Indians of the Northwest Coast of Canada—it was once called primitive art. But it isn't primitive. It isn't primitive in its shape or in the way it is made or in the deep feelings it expresses.
Carley wrote this note to her mother.Dear Mom,I just read online that people with pets live longer. Psychologists have proven that children with pets learn to be more responsible and empathetic. Dogs provide great home security and companionship. I think a puppy would be the perfect gift for my birthday, don’t you?Love,Carley
