Northern Ireland stays with the United Kingdom. 1922-1923 – Irish Civil War won by the Irish Free State 1937 – Irish Free State becomes Ireland. 1960s-1970s – The Troubles: a time of intense violence and conflict between Northern Nationalists (Catholics) and Unionists (Protestants). Political (and some consider terrorist) organizations formed: Provisional Irish Republican Army, the Irish Republican Army (IRA), the National Irish Liberation Army, the Ulster Defense Association, the Ulster Volunteer Force, and Sinn Fein There have been treaties and agreements; however, the conflict continues even today.
