Question 1 • Human Geography - SS2045
Answer:
Both China and India have tried to reduce fertility through family planning and wider access to contraception. China used a centralized and highly restrictive approach, especially the one-child policy, with fines and sometimes forced abortions or sterilizations. India has relied more on education, contraception, later marriage, public-health programs, and women’s empowerment, although sterilization campaigns and incentives have sometimes become coercive and have disproportionately affected poor women. In my opinion, India’s approach is more admirable when it focuses on educating and empowering women and allowing voluntary reproductive decisions. China achieved faster population reduction, but its coercive enforcement caused greater human-rights violations and serious long-term problems such as aging and sex-ratio imbalance.
